A look at the TUXEDO InfinityBook Pro 14
Power Package
A high-end compact laptop with Linux support out of the box.
We've looked at InfinityBooks from TUXEDO before, most recently the 16" Gen7 MK1 in the August 2023 issue of Linux Magazine [1]. In that review, Joe Casad concluded with: "It's light, convenient, easy to type on, and easy to plug things into. The TUXEDO laptop gave me everything I needed and more." But there's also a 14" model – now up to the ninth generation – available in various configurations on TUXEDO's website [2]. For this review, I'm looking at the InfinityBook Pro 14 Gen9 (Figure 1), which is priced at EUR1,230 without VAT.
TUXEDO (the company) is familiar to many long-time Linux users, but as a recap: It's based in Augsburg, Germany, and sells a range of desktop and laptop PCs with Linux preinstalled. The company prides itself on shipping hardware that's "perfectly optimized for running Linux" [3], contributing code to drivers for better compatibility, and also being compliant with German data protection laws and the GDPR.
The Pro 14 Gen9 measures 31x21.5cm, and due to its slight wedge-like shape goes from 2.4cm at the thickest side (by the hinge) to 1.9cm at the front, taking the rubber feet into account. On the scales it weighs in at 1.5KG, which is quite a jump from the previous models, with the Gen8 and Gen7 weighing 1.3KG and the Gen6 only 1KG. So it's not especially lightweight, but acceptable given the specifications (more on those in a moment).
