IGEL Presents Entry-Level Thin Client
At a price of $186 for its new thin client model, IGEL Technology is trying to win schools and small businesses over to server-based computing.
IGEL Technology sees the IGEL One as an entry-level thin client for schools and small businesses.
The target group for the IGEL One entry-level model is doctors' offices, travel bureaus, schools, small businesses and tax consultants. The device is 142 x 55 x 174 millimeters and can be attached to the back of a monitor with optional equipment. It contains a VIA Eden CPU at 400 MHz, 512 MByte RAM and 1 GByte Flash memory. The fanless device takes up 9 Watts in idle mode, 2 Watts in sleep mode.
The graphics chip provides a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1440 pixels over a VGA port. Next to that the Igel One has a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet port, a PS/2 keyboard interface and two USB 2.0 ports. Parallel and serial interfaces require optional adapters. The thin client also has an audio chip, an internal speaker and line-out and mic-in ports.
The operating system is a native IGEL Linux implementation. Users choose a protocol on startup, which can include Microsoft's RDP, Citrix ICA, Ericom PowerTerm WebConnect, NoMachine NX or Cendio ThinLinc. Management is by local setup or VNC access. Print services are over LPD or IPP.
