Miguel de Icaza Announces Xamarin Company

May 17, 2011

In a blog post on May 16, Miguel de Icaza announced Xamarin, a new Mono-based product company.

"We have been trying to spin Mono off from Novell for more than a year now," de Icaza writes. "Everyone agreed that Mono would have a brighter future as an independent company, so a plan was prepared last year."

He says that the new company will focus on a new commercial .NET offering for iOS and Android; it will contribute, maintain and develop the open source Mono and Moonlight components; and it will explore the Moonlight opportunities in the mobile space and the Mac appstore.

"The new versions of .NET for the iPhone and Android will be source compatible with MonoTouch and Mono for Android. Like those versions, they will be commercial products, built on top of the open core Mono," he writes. To help with the new company's projects, provide feedback by completing an online platforms and features survey.
