On the DVD
On the DVD
Debian 8 and Ubuntu 15.04.
Debian 8 "Jessie"
The latest Debian release ships with kernel 3.16 and comes with five years of support. The default Systemd init brings faster boot times, cgroups for services, and many other benefits. SysV is still available for those who need the legacy init system. Version 8 comes with a new Debian Installer, GCC 4.9.2, Gnome 3.1.4, KDE Applications 4.14.2, and many updated applications. The multiarch image on the DVD supports both i386 and amd64.
Ubuntu 15.04 "Vivid Vervet"
The most visible change in the 15.04 version of Ubuntu is the switch from an orange to a purple desktop, but the most talked-about change is the switch from Upstart to the Systemd init system. Version 15.04 ships with Unity 7, not the anticipated Unity 8, and kernel 3.19. Vervet boasts faster startups and shutdowns, Nvidia driver refinements, and a host of updated packages. The image on the DVD boots to a Live 32-bit Ubuntu desktop.
