Communication has revolutionized our world. It’s hard to recall just how many phone calls I’ve made so far today, or this week, let alone stop to think about how often I use some form of telephony device to keep in touch with friends and colleagues around the world. It certainly wasn’t always so easy to keep in touch. In fact, until 1956, calling my parents across the Atlantic using a telephone would have indirectly involved an unreliable long distance radio transmission at the fantastic rate of US$ 6 per minute.
