KDE 4: Beta Four and RC1 of the Kitt Developer Platform

The KDE development team has set itself beta goals as milestones en route to the first release candidate. An initial release candidate of the KDE 4.0 developer platform is now available along with the improved beta four.

Much work has gone into Plasma and there have been many bugfixes accompanied by much code polishing. The KDE team is looking to remove showstoppers before KDE4 enters the release candidate phase. The to-do list includes the Plasma project, which is basically complete but still open for a performance boost, along with a bug that occurs on playing short sound files.

Parallel to the beta four of of KDE 4, developers can look forward to the first release candidate of the KDE developer platform, Kitt, which contains libraries and tools for the development of KDE applications.

The Live CD with KDE4 Beta4 includes a full set of KDE 4 modules except Kdewebdev and Plasmoids.

Testers are welcome: as always, the new version is available from the project’s info pages. A text by programmer Simon Tatham explains how to write useful bug reports. The beta four is referred to as version 3.94. At the same time, the KDE team from Open Suse is offering a Live CD with the latest KDE 4 version for Intel 686 platforms, while Debian is working on a similar offering.
