Sun Places Java UI Toolkit Under Terms of the GPL

Aug 19, 2008

Three months after the announcement at the JavaOne exhibition, Sun Microsystems is putting the discussed plans into action and placed the Lightweight UI Toolkit (LWUIT) under the conditions of the GPLv2. The Toolkit is intended for Java ME applications.

The user interface toolkit has surprassed expectations in the three months waiting time since its open source release, according to Sun's Senior Technologist Terence Barr. Shai Almog and Chen Fishbein, the owners and architects of the LWUIT project, have contributed two code updates. Many developers and distributors of mobile device applications have decided to use features of LWUIT, reports Barr.

According to Barr, the developer framework is much more than a collection of tools used to build a user interface. In particular, developers should be able to adapt Java ME applications to fit a number of devices using the Lightweight UI Toolkit.

The download is available at LWUIT Project.
